If you’re looking for an overnight luxury retreat to escape the hustle and bustle of London, look no further than Sopwell House. The impressive country house spa hotel sits in 12 acres of countryside just south of South Albans. Surrounded by peaceful fields, rustling trees and the blissful sounds of chirping birds it’s the perfect staycation spot.
A Hotel in St Albans
The idyllic spot is only a 20-minute train ride from London followed by a five-minute taxi journey from St Albans station.
Dating back to 1603, the charming property is a blend of old and new architecture. The grand whitewashed building against the vibrant, lush greenery is a welcome sight on arrival.

Warm and friendly welcomes await you at check-in. We were led to the exclusive gated area for guests staying in the Mews Suites. With a quick tap of the room card, the beautiful gates open up to a stunning landscaped garden full of colourful wildflowers, manicured topiary, water features and THE most gorgeous hydrotherapy pool.
The gardens are for exclusive use to the guests staying in the handful of suites surrounding this haven, formerly a stable block.
The suites at Sopwell House
The charming features continue as we’re led through a wooden gate and small patio area to enter the Orchid suite. Home for the night, the immaculate and stylish suite came with all the luxuries for a perfect hideaway.
An enormous bed, a modern touch-of-a-button fireplace, underfloor heating, mini bar, espresso machine, WIFI and Sky TV.
The en suite bathroom came with a power rain shower and wood effect floor tiles, as well as being stocked with gorgeous ESPA toiletries.
Our welcome gifts of fresh, sweet strawberries and Battenberg cake with a twist – a thoughtful added bonus. You’ll see the Battenberg pop up in various places around the hotel. The connection? A homage to Lord Battenberg, who bought the house as a country residence in 1901.
Facilities at Sopwell House
Once unpacked, the cocktail lounge was the first port of call. We had to try the hotel’s signature cocktail. A Battenberg cocktail nonetheless, with champagne, pineapple juice and strawberry coulis.
With the sun shining high our private quarters and the hydrotherapy pool were beckoning. We could have been lounging poolside in some exotic faraway destination. But no, this is St Albans and it did very nicely indeed.
Another luxurious addition is the Cottonmill Spa, a tranquil, ambient and luxurious space for pampering and relaxation. There are a range of ESPA and Clarins treatments available, the head, neck and shoulders massage is a lovely treat.
Other facilities include a sauna, steam room, indoor pool or gym.
Dining at Sopwell House
Dinner is in a stylish and contemporary brasserie. It’s great to be able to watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen as serving up classic and global dishes.
We enjoyed an array of dishes such as the crayfish and prawn cocktail, spiced chickpea spring onion and cumin potato cakes and a moreish Bakewell tart. The proof was in the practically scraped clean plates.
For a more gourmet dining experience, there is also the award-winning two AA rosette restaurant. Where diners can enjoy seasonal British and European dishes.

The evening ended with a nightcap in the cocktail lounge. Warning: the sofas are so comfy assistance may be needed to be removed.
The next morning started on a high with room service breakfast on the sunny terrace. Order eggs any way you like and they’re accompanied with the usual hot morning treats from pastries and preserves to juices.
Sopwell House is the perfect place to unwind. The best part is it’s only a mere 20-minute train ride from the capital.

You’re guaranteed to return home relaxed, revitalised, and rejuvenated. Goes to show you don’t need to travel far for peaceful relaxation in glorious surroundings.
