Day Trips on the Royal WIndsor Steam Express

With a sharp blow of the whistle and the magnificent 61306 Mayflower departs in a plume of steam and smoke. Built in 1948 by the British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, it is one of only two B1 Class locomotives in operation. Steam Dreams Rail Co. offers three classes of travel: Pullman Style Dining, Premier and Premium Standard. There is no dining option on the Premium Standard but there is complimentary tea and coffee and trolley service. Most people pack their own picnics to enjoy on the train.

Splash out on Pullman class and it’s like stepping into a romantic railway scene on a 1950s film set. The capacious black and gold armchair-style seats, vintage light fittings, embroidered curtains, and wood-panelled walls complete the aesthetics of the glamorous carriage. White linen drapes the table which is adorned with champagne glasses, white crockery, and silver cutlery, awaiting the delicious food service. Depending on the time you choose to travel, the Pullman Style Dining either comes with a glass of champagne, champagne brunch, or a champagne afternoon tea.
As the steam train slowly chugs out of the station smartly dressed waiters fill glasses with champagne. The only downside is the view on the outside isn’t as pretty as the inside. Once you pass some famous landmarks leaving London like Chelsea Bridge and Battersea Power Station, most of the journey is spent passing through industrial estates and commuter towns.

Not long after the champagne, the much-anticipated cream tea is served with a brioche roll filled with salmon or a vegetarian filling. A concoction of aubergine, tomato, and spinach and rather delicious. Traditional scones with clotted cream and jam, a selection of macaroons and unlimited refills of tea and coffee completed the plate.
Arrive in WIndsor
The 90-minute journey flies by and before you know it, you’ll be disembarking in one of the country’s most historical towns steeped in 900 years of Royal history.

Once in Windsor, guests can explore at their leisure before making their way back on the regular National Rail Services. There are regular trains departing from Windsor and Eton Riverside back to London Waterloo and the journey takes less than an hour. Train tickets can be purchased on the day at the Windsor and Eton Riverside station.

We strolled through the town and outside the castle grounds, the Queen was also in residence as the Royal Standard was flying high. There is also the Royal Windsor pub directly opposite the station which has a lovely outdoor garden space with great views of Windsor Castle.
