The Fish Hotel: Back to Nature Luxury in the Cotswolds

Nuzzled into the 400-acre Farncombe Estate just outside the pretty village of Broadway is the Fish Hotel. The countryside hotel is like no other in the Cotswolds and is made up of a collection of quirky country houses, huts, treehouses, and a private farmhouse. Just the tonic when you need to escape the city for a slice of back-to-nature luxury.

This Cotswold hotel takes its name from its home on Fish Hill. Named as medieval monks are said to have stored fish here. Surrounded by woodlands and patchwork fields this country retreat is a haven for outdoor activities. Think hiking and cycling to pretty picnic spots. Perfect for kids and the four-legged furry members of the family.

Rooms at the Fish Hotel

The Fish provides half boutique and half glamping accommodation. It’s a hotel designed perfectly for the ‘gram as well as being welcoming and homey. Nette Reynolds owner and designer brings country chic with a touch of Scandi inspiration to the rooms, creating a calm and luxurious feel.

The rooms on offer in the Farmhouse, the Coach House, and Stables offer incredible views over the Cotswolds. The luxury buildings are dotted around the grounds, some on a hillside, others on a small lake giving the hotel a real feel of space.

We stayed in one of the impressive Big Suites in the Stables. Decorated in hues of cream, grey, and duck egg blue complete with a wood burner, a basket of firewood, a super-king bed, faux fur throws and a complimentary mini-bar filled with tasty goodies.

The bathroom delivered on the aesthetics front too with a roll-top bath, beautiful mismatched tiles, and a personal favourite, Temple Spa toiletries.

Even with two seating areas, one in front of the woodburner with two small armchairs and a sofa bed where the girls slept, it still felt spacious.

And for those wanting to head back to nature with all your creature comforts (of course), book a luxury hut. These two person abodes are kitted out with all the mod cons, offering a charming woodland retreat.

Finally, live out your childhood dream in a treetop hideaway that sleeps two adults and two children comfortably. Think underfloor heating, ensuite, separate bedroom with two child bunk beds, and decking area wrapped around a large oak tree. And for the win, each treehouse has two heated outdoor baths on the deck. You’ll never want to leave.

Food And Drink At the Fish

The Hook is a seafood-inspired restaurant headed up by Chef Martin Burge. Expect crusty warm bread served with seaweed butter, signature dishes of rock oysters, grilled lobster, and mussels. There are plenty of other great bistro fayre including veggie options. I dined on sweetcorn and paprika soup followed by a whole artichoke topped with mushroom and poached egg.

For a chilled-out dinner head to the lounge-like bar for a taco menu. It’s the lively hub of the hotel. Sit at the bar, relax on the sofas or cosy up by the fire.

If you really can’t tear yourself away from your delightful room, the hotel also offers a pizza delivery service to the room. They’ve really thought of everything.

The Fish also takes a nontraditional approach to traditional afternoon tea. Try their Tipsy Tea, which begins with a tea-infused cocktail followed by many more, paired with finger sandwiches, scones, and macarons.

Breakfast is served in the Hook restaurant buffet style with cereals, juices, cheeses, meats, flapjack, sourdough bread, and pastries. Order cooked options from the open kitchen, such as eggs, bacon, veggie sausages, porridge, and more from the open kitchen.

Things to do at the Fish

There is plenty to do at The Fish, for starters you have a 400-acre playground on your doorstep. Visit the dedicated boot room with maps and Original Muck boots to borrow and enjoy the number of walking and nature trails.

There is also an outdoor play area made from recycled wood for kids to let off steam. In the games room try your hand at the retro arcade games, shoot pool, play darts, board games, or relax on the bean bags. You can even indulge in a private cinema session, book a slot and enjoy your favourite film with popcorn and drinks.

Head out and explore idyllic chocolate box villages. Wander the streets of ancient market towns. The cultural city of Oxford isn’t too far. Nor is the world of Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Child Friendly Hotel

The perfect place for families, there is a choice of accommodation from interconnecting small suites and big suites with sofa beds to a family of four treehouses. There is no charge for children under three and those aged four to sixteen are charged £20 per night.

With so much to explore onsite and great family day-outs nearby, boredom will never be an issue. If the parents want a little time to themselves, there are babysitting and childcare facilities available.

Dog Friendly Hotel
