The classic seaside town of Weston Super-Mare in North Somerset has been a popular destination for holiday-makers since the Victorian era. It’s reassuringly timeless and ticks all the boxes with its Grand Pier and penny slot machines, Kiss-Me-Quick hats, and Victorian Promenade shelters.
Over recent years the coastal town has seen somewhat of a revival with the younger, arty crowd. Back in 2015, Banksy helped to put Weston on the map with Dismaland. A pop-up exhibition that took over a disused lido in the form of an apocalyptic theme park. It led to a new wave of interest in the town and prom cafes suddenly held a retro-cool appeal.

Places To Visit in Weston-Super-Mare
Weston Super Mare Beach
During the summer season, visitors flock to the long golden shores and calm waters of Weston-Super-Mare. Sunbathing on a clear day will offer great views over Weston Bay towards Wales, and south towards Exmoor. The tidal range is the second highest in the world. At low tide caution should be taken as wide areas of dangerous mudflats are exposed and at high tide, the waters come in extremely quickly.
The promenade runs along a two-mile stretch and is full of the usual candy floss, ice cream, and beach paraphernalia kiosks. A 40-metre observation wheel can also be found which offers magnificent views over Bristol Channel and coastline.
The Grand Pier
What is a seaside town without a pier? Weston-Super-Mare has one of the best, The Grand Pier ticks all the boxes. The historic landmark was first constructed in 1904 but was destroyed in a fire in 2008 and rebuilt.
The 366-metre long pleasure pier has everything you need for a day of fun at the seaside, including fairground rides, a 4D cinema, and some great restaurants and food kiosks – bubblewrap or doughnuts anyone? It is also the venue for many events from tribute acts, to murder mystery parties and comedy nights.
Weston Street Art Trail
The Banksy effect inspired a new generation of local street artists to start creating their own intricate stencils in the town. Visitors can follow the Weston street art trail of local talent JPS and female artist Fawn. If you’re a street art fan this has to be on your list.
The walk doesn’t include all the artwork and of course, the very nature of street art means it’s continually changing. There are some Weston-Super-Mare classics that have survived over the last few years, look out for the Dark Knight, Predator, the Skater Boy and the Balloon girl. Papa’s
Considered a tourist location in its own right, Papa’s has been serving traditional fish and chips since 1966 in Weston-Super-Mare. There are other branches around the UK, but it is always great to pop into the original branch. Nothing beats the taste of proper fish and chips by the seaside. Sit in the restaurant or enjoy it with the fresh sea air.
Winter Gardens PAVILION
One of the most iconic venues in Weston-Super-Marei is centrally located on the seafront. The Winter Gardens Pavilion has hosted many famous acts since the 1920s. After a £15 million refurbishment, it’s home to two restaurants and a neo-Georgian ballroom. Expect to see live music acts, dance classes and more.
Museums Trail
Weston-Super-Mare is home to three museums, a winner if you’re looking for a rainy-day activity. The Weston Museum adds an interactive element to the history of the town. Aviation buffs should pay a visit to the largest Helicopter Museum in the world with over 80 different models on display. The Lambretta Museum is packed with vintage scooters and all kinds of nostalgic memorabilia and you don’t need to be a scooter buff to enjoy a wander.
Bleadon Levels Nature Reserve
Only a short drive out of the seaside town is Bleadon Levels Nature Reserve where you’ll find 68 acres of land teeming with a variety of wildlife. It’s an amazing day out for nature lovers with lots of trails leading to salt marshes, tidal creeks, meadows and lagoons. On the land and water lookout for the water voles, brown hares, and otters, and in the sky try to spot the short-eared owls and skylarks. There is so much to see whether you choose to enjoy the landscape on foot or by bike.

Steep Holm
Just off the coast of Weston-Super-Mare is Steep Holm Island. Now uninhabited, the island’s intriguing history is linked to Vikings, smugglers and pirates. A Site for Special Scientific interest due to its rare plants, there is lots to explore on the small island. Walk the cliff tops, wander around the military buildings explore the remains of a 12th-century Augustinian priory. Head to the nature reserve and bird sanctuary for some wildlife spotting or simply enjoy relaxing on a tranquil, rugged island with beautiful views.
Day trips operate between May and September but are very much dependent on weather conditions. The 12-hour excursions can be booked through Bay Island Voyages. Tea and Coffee facilities are available on the island along with areas for a picnic and a rest.

Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge
Head east from Weston-Super-Mare to the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty famous for its picturesque limestone hills. Spend a day exploring steep hilltops, beautiful heathlands, and breathtaking gorges. A haven for outdoor lovers there are plenty of walking trails, cycling, and horseriding routes to enjoy. The more adventurous can even try their hand at caving and climbing.

It’s also home to one of the most revered natural landmarks, Cheddar Gorge. The largest canyon in Britain was carved out in the last Ice Age measuring a whopping 130 metres deep and three miles long. In 1903 it’s where Britain’s oldest human skeleton was found dating back 9,000 years. The spectacular cathedral-sized caves can be found at the lower end of the gorge near the village of Cheddar. The perfect day trip from the coastal town.
